Effective editing focuses on the detail of your document to ensure it's accurate and appropriate for your intended audience.


A good editor will tactfully intervene to help improve the flow and quality of your text so it's fit for purpose and free of errors.


It’s my job to ensure your text is: clear, correct, coherent, complete, concise, consistent and credible – the Chartered Institute of Editing & Proofreading refer to it as the ‘7 Cs of editing’.

Here’s how I can help:

  • Prepare a style sheet to record editorial decisions / apply house style

  • Improve language, clarity and style so the text is understandable and readable

  • Check all images, illustrations, captions, tables, references, footnotes and endnotes are correct

  • Ensure numbers, lists and titles are correct and sequential

  • Check for consistency in the main body of text, headers and footers

  • Ensure grammar, punctuation, spelling and style errors are corrected

  • Query doubtful facts and dates

  • Look out for sudden changes, inaccuracies or inconsistencies within the text. 



The all-important proofread is a thorough check and final tidy up of your written material ahead of publication.


Proofreading is a vital stage of the editorial process; nobody wants their text to include unprofessional mistakes and typos. It can be damaging to your reputation and costly if a reprint is needed.


I am an Intermediate Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing & Proofreading and all of my work is carried out in accordance with their code of practice.


I am a fully trained proofreader and achieved a Merit in the Publishing Training Centre’s proofreading course. Depending on your requirements, I can mark up proofs on paper, screen, Word using track changes or PDF using commenting tools. I am fully qualified in using the British Standards Institution (BSI) marks.


Here’s how I can help:

  • Compare proofs line by line or read ‘blind’

  • Check spelling, punctuation and basic grammatical errors

  • Review layout, page numbers, headings, headers and footers

  • Check tables, figures, graphs, images, illustrations and captions

  • Ensure that links work and cross references are correct

  • Review lists and sequences 

  • Highlight inconsistencies in spelling and style

  • Query any ambiguity in meaning

  • Ensure text adheres to the house or copyeditor’s style sheet.

If your text requires re-writing then it’s a copyeditor you need, not a proofreader! There is another level of service that sits between a copyedit and a proofread and that’s a ‘proof-edit’. This involves working with text that has been formatted and laid out (but not copyedited) and requires more intervention than proofreading.
